Algbera 1 Topics:

Functions

This unit bundles student expectations that address the exploration of linear and nonlinear data and their representations and relationships. Data includes models of linear, quadratic, exponential, and inverse functions. Functional relationships are the basis of algebra and will be the focus of Algebra 1 throughout the course. The exploration of functions through data collection and analysis is a foundation for this study and is introduced at the beginning of Algebra 1.

Algebraic Expressions and Equations

This unit bundles student expectations that focus on simplifying expressions using properties of algebra, solving equations, and representing solution methods. Students extend the methods used to solve equations in middle school to include functional analysis of graphs and tables using technology.

Linear Equations, Inequalities, and Application

This unit bundles student expectations that address formulating equations and inequalities, solving equations and inequalities by various methods, and justifying the reasonableness of the solutions. Graphing technologies are used to help students explore connections between various representations of equations and inequalities.

Linear Functions

This unit bundles student expectations that continue the exploration of functions with an in-depth study of the characteristics and properties of linear functions including transformations of the linear parent function. Throughout the unit, students make connections between various representations and characteristics of linear functions using technology.  Students also investigate graphical solutions of two-variable linear inequalities.

Systems of Linear Equations

This unit bundles student expectations that address solving linear systems of equations in two unknowns by various methods and justifying the reasonableness of the solutions. Graphing technologies are used to help students explore the relationships within systems of equations.

Exponents and Polynomials

The student expectations bundled in this unit involve generating and applying the rules of exponents, simplifying polynomials, and operations with polynomial expressions. Students also investigate the connections between multiplication of polynomials and factoring polynomials.

Quadratic Functions

This unit bundles student expectations that address analysis of quadratic functions and their characteristics, including interpreting and describing the effects of parameter changes. Investigations of situations represented by quadratic functions include data collection, real-world problems, and use of technology.
